The Brethren Missionary Herald Company (BMH) has been the communication/publishing arm of what is now the Fellowship of Grace Brethren Churches, since 1940. Its activities historically have been the publication of a denominational news publication (most recently the Brethren Missionary Herald magazine, which ceased publication in 1996), the supplying of church resources through retail outlets (three Christian bookstores in Indianapolis, Ind., Columbus, Ohio, and Winona Lake, Ind.—all now either sold or closed) and the publishing of books, often in 13-chapter formats and used widely by Grace Brethren churches as adult Sunday School curriculum. As the needs and complexion of the Fellowship changed, BMH essentially ceased operations during the late 1990s. A new board, operating with the vision and leadership of its then-chair, Pastor Dan Thornton of Peninsula Grace Brethren Church of Soldotna, Alaska, generated new activity with the prudence to re-birth the organization. The result was a re-formed mission -- To nurture Great Commission teamwork among the people and churches of the Fellowship of Grace Brethren Churches by building bridges of communication. As the board worked toward this mission, it began working with the help of experienced consultant/pastor Jesse Deloe. Deloe was engaged in May of 2003 as full-time director of operations for the re-formed company. In July of 2003, the board engaged Terry White, an experienced publisher, pastor, and former Grace College journalism professor, as executive director. Under White’s leadership, FGBC World, a free, bi-monthly news and information publication for the Fellowship was founded in January, 2004. BMH Books was re-invigorated as new manuscripts were obtained and two websites, www.fgbcworld.com and www.bmhbooks.com , were established, as well as a weblog at www.fgbc-world.blogspot.com. Liz Cutler Gates, an experienced journalist and communicator with deep roots in the Grace Brethren movement, was brought on board in January of 2007 as editorial director. In 2010, she assumed the role of executive director. She also serves as managing editor of FGBC World and other periodicals. White continues in a part-time role as publisher of BMH Books, while Deloe serves in a consulting role. Now occupying newly-renovated offices in the BMH Building at 1104A Kings Highway in Winona Lake, Indiana, BMH is forging ahead to link churches and people in the FGBC as well as aiding and assisting the ministries of the FGBC’s national organizations when possible. Along with board chair Todd Scoles, board members include Bob Arenobine (secretary), Bruce Barlow, Dan Thornton (treasurer), Pat Phillips (at-large member of executive committee), Nathan Bryant, Rick Fairman, Barb Wooler, Nate Harrison, and Paul Twichell. ![]() Left to right, front, Pat Phillips, Bruce Barlow, Todd Scoles, Barb Wooler, Nate Harrison; center, Dan Thornton, Bob Arenobine; back, Nathan Bryan, Terry White, Rick Fairman |
