Finding Our Focus
A History of the Grace Brethren Church
Author: David R. Plaster, Th.D.
In 1708, a group of only eight people, who were dissatisfied with the sterility and cold formality of the religious institutions of the period, gathered by the Eider River in Schwarzenau, Germany, for a baptismal service. From that rather inauspicious beginning, a movement began to which a number of "Brethren" groups today trace their origin, including the Fellowship of Grace Brethren Churches.
In Conquering Frontiers, the late Dr. Homer A. Kent, Sr. documented the history of the Grace Brethren Fellowship from those days early in the 18th century up to 1958 and then, in a revision, up to 1972. The succeeding years witnessed significant changes in the Fellowship, and Dr. David R. Plaster, in Finding Our Focus has carried the history up to 1992 in some detail and, in a closing epilogue, mentions events and personalities up to 2003 that reflect the re-discoverd vision and mission of the FGBC.
Dr. David R. Plaster is the Senior Pastor of the Grace Brethren Church of Columbus in Worthington, Ohio. For 23 years he served at Grace College in Winona Lake, Indiana. Dr. Plaster was Vice President for Academic Affairs and Professor of Theology and Church History from 1991-2007.
